New emerging remote-sensing techniques are currently being developed with a focus on providing vertically resolved information on tropospheric gases and aerosols suitable for direct interpretation and satellite validation. In order to foster communication on these efforts, we propose a new dedicated session titled 'New developments in tropospheric profiling techniques'. The target audience for this session consists of scientists active in developing tropospheric composition profiling capability with LIDAR, FTIR, (A-)MAXDOAS, and in situ sonde techniques. The focus of the session would be on new instrumental developments, new inversion algorithms, validation and demonstration activities, intercalibration activities, and sensitivity studies investigating the information content of new methods. The session would be a suitable platform for presenting results from recent campaigns focusing on tropospheric profiling (e.g. the 2009 CINDI campaign).
