Most existing crust and mantle models are constrained largely by continental observations, since the vast majority of sensors for solid earth geophysics are deployed on the continents. Structures beneath two thirds of the earths surface covered by oceans are yet poorly constrained and explored.

Over the past decade, the possibilities for conducting long-term experiments (e.g. seismological, magnetotelluric) on the ocean floor have steadily increased due to advances in instrumentation, in particular broadband sensors. Yet technical and logistical circumstances for sea-floor deployments remain challenging and costly.

We welcome contributions from all fields of ocean-based measurements for solid earth geophysics, showcasing recent developments and successes. This includes different kinds of ocean bottom instrumentation, experiment design, and results from ocean-based or amphibian deployments.

The session is a joint session between the Japan and European Geoscience Unions.
