Techniques for quantifying fine sediment dynamics in river catchments (co-organized)

This session aims to bring together contributions that address various techniques for quantifying fine sediment dynamics in river catchments. The scope of this session encompasses measurement or modelling based approaches for quantifying fine-grained sediment source contributions, transit times and redistribution. This includes quantifying rates of fine sediment transfer through different components of the sediment cascade spanning hillslope to catchment scales, as well as sediment exchange within and between channel networks, floodplains and estuarine environments. We particularly encourage contributions from researchers working with sediment source fingerprinting or tracing techniques to address questions related to catchment sediment source contributions spanning headwater to coastal environments.

We invite specific contributions to this session that address any aspects of the following:
• Developments in field measurement techniques, including instrumentation or data analysis procedures
• Soil and sediment tracing techniques for quantifying soil erosion and redistribution, particularly with reference to uncertainty
• Sediment source tracing or fingerprinting studies, particularly those addressing key assumptions to support development of these techniques
• Applications of radioisotope tracers to quantify sediment transit times over timescales relevant to river catchment management
• Development, applications and testing of catchment models for simulating runoff generation, soil erosion and catchment sediment exports
• Comparing and evaluating different combinations of techniques, including testing of model outputs and assumptions against field datasets and the critical appraisal of method performance under different environmental conditions
• Integrated approaches to developing catchment sediment budgets: linking different measurement techniques and/or models to understand sediment delivery processes
