Towards Global Integrated Hydrology Simulations: Perspectives and Advances in Terrestrial Modeling
Convener: Reed Maxwell | Co-conveners: Hector Basile, Laura Condon, Inge de Graaf, Niko Wanders

Questions critical to human water use and environmental change increasingly require modelling approaches that incorporate interconnected hydrologic processes from the subsurface to the atmosphere, include human-water interactions and bridge a wide range of spatial scales. These needs have pushed models forward in both process complexity and spatial extent. Hydrology models that include connections between groundwater, surface water, land surface processes, human water use and land-atmosphere interactions are now running at high resolution over continents and across the globe. Despite significant advances in model realism and accuracy, there are still many technical challenges and data gaps that that must be addressed by the hydrologic community as we work towards computationally efficient and realistic global modeling platforms. Subsurface representation is particularly challenging and remains one of the most significant gaps in many large-scale modeling approaches. We invite submissions that address these challenges and advance integrated large-scale hydrologic modeling. We especially welcome contributions on new model developments and performance from regional to continental scales including: formulation and creation of input datasets, comparison to observations, process representation and computational advances. We are excited to communicate success stories and challenges as the hydrology community advances an integrated perspective of Earth’s freshwater.

Prof. Stefan Kollet (UniBonn, FZ-Jülich) will be our invited speaker and will discuss modeling perspectives from EU-CORDEX to all of Earth's terrestrial system.
