Implementing the soil monitoring: indicators, monitoring networks and practical applications
Convener: Stefano Mocali | Co-conveners: Antonio Bispo, Francesco VitaliECSECS, Maria Fantappiè

The implementation of the Soil Monitoring Law (SML) requires harmonized and operational monitoring systems capable of assessing soil condition, identifying degradation processes, and supporting sustainable soil management across Europe. Building on existing national and regional monitoring programmes, this session aims to showcase practical approaches, tools, and experiences that facilitate the transition from soil monitoring to evidence-based decision making.
We invite contributions addressing the development and application of soil health indicators, monitoring networks, assessment frameworks, and innovative technologies, including remote and proximal sensing, digital soil mapping, modelling approaches, and sensor-based monitoring. Particular attention will be given to methods for harmonizing and integrating datasets, establishing common assessment criteria, and supporting reporting and policy implementation across multiple governance levels.

The session will also highlight how monitoring information can support sustainable land management, soil restoration, climate and biodiversity policies, and stakeholder engagement, fostering the effective implementation of the Soil Monitoring Law and the protection of soil resources across Europe.
