“Connecting communities to deliver seamless weather and climates science and services” - The additional focus of this year’s EMS Annual Meeting addresses the needs, challenges and benefits from seamless inter- and transdisciplinary interactions within and between communities’ respective objectives, methodologies and partnerships.
As a kick-off of the week’s theme, a prominent opening discussion event is planned on Monday forenoon, with the ultimate objective to lead to general and concrete recommendations towards communities associated with meteorology and climatology for improving its growing role within and in engaging with society.
At first, a short round of introductions will take place. Each invited speaker will answer the same three questions that address current and future activities as well as value chain priorities in relation to the focus topic, with a specific focus on co-design and communication. These statements and outlooks will prepare the follow-up panel discussion moderated by a professional science journalist - focussing on challenges and strategic visions for “connecting communities” towards future seamless actions and research in Europe. Afterwards, a broader discussion will close the high-level opening event, where the audience is actively involved.
A broad palette of high-level speakers from different communities related to weather and climate has been invited – DWD, WMO, ECMWF, EUMETSAT, Public-Private Partnerships among them. Please find more information on our speakers at https://www.emetsoc.org/ems2022-plenary-speakers/

The Engagement with Society (ES) sessions address efforts and challenges in creating stronger links between meteorological and climate activities and the socio-economic environment, providing a platform for users to present their requirements and use of applications. The intertwined relation of meteorology and climate sciences with society requires the development of education and training as well as ways to communicate scientific advances. This also entails the need to attract more young people to our science, to support career development, and to develop certification procedures.
The 2022 Keynote Lecture will be given by Insa Thiele-Eich, University of Bonn and Coordinator of the University Partnership for Atmospheric Sciences (UPAS). More details will follow

Over the years, efforts regarding outreach and science communication are not only considered more and more important, but are also becoming requirements by funding agencies. Call it a requirement, call it an opportunity: scientists are increasingly faced with questions such as what messages and topics to convey to which audience, which formats and channels to choose, and what communication strategy to choose. Insa Thiele-Eich, a meteorologist from the University of Bonn and Coordinator of the University Partnership for Atmospheric Sciences (UPAS, see below) will focus on these questions of science communication from her own experience during the 2022 Keynote Lecture.
Bio: Dr. Insa Thiele-Eich is a meteorologist and climate researcher working as the coordinator for the newly-founded University Partnership for Atmospheric Sciences (UPAS) at the University Bonn.
Throughout her career, she conducted research for improved weather and climate forecasts as well as studying the connection between climate change and human health. For her doctoral thesis, she traveled to Bangladesh to analyze the effects of climate change on a country which is a hot-bed for natural disasters, only to realize that while Bangladesh is far away, the challenges we face in the coming years are of a global nature.
In 2017, she was selected in a year-long intense selection process from over 400 women by the commercial space flight initiative “Die Astronautin”, and since then has experienced extraordinary training to prepare for a ten-day scientific mission onboard the international space station ISS. In addition to attending theoretical lectures in aerospace technology, underwater simulations, obtaining a private pilot’s license, rocket launch simulations in the human centrifuge, weightlessness on parabolic flights, and isolation training during a cave mission.
We are delighted to honour the 2022 awardees at this EMS Annual Meeting. All our awardees will present their work during the event in Bonn.

The University Partnership for Atmospheric Sciences (UPAS) at the University Bonn invites Early Career Scientists to a networking lunch during the EMS2022.
After two years of pandemic and little opportunities to meet in person and build networks, the event is aimed at facilitating exchange and development new international collaborations, in particular for scientists in the early stages of their career.
We appreciate if any one interested would indicate their likely participation during the conference registration process, so food will be enough for everyone.
The catering will be vegetarian, mostly vegan.

This year, instead of having an official conference dinner, we would like to invite you to the first Pub Quiz at an EMS Annual Meeting! A Pub Quiz is a fun activity at a bar or a pub where teams compete against each other by trying to answer not too difficult but very random questions of general knowledge. Literally any category is possible from history, cooking, languages, weather and climate to music. The team with the most points wins a symbolic price. The idea is to have lots of fun, enjoy drinks and food and generate debates with new contacts. The only thing not allowed is googling!
The event will start at 7:30 pm at the "James Joyce" Irish Pub Bonn in the city centre (Mauspfad 6-10, 53111 Bonn) and has an open end. The maximum number of game participants is 50 persons, divided into 8 - 10 teams. Very important: First come, first serve! Of course, you are welcome to join us at the pub without being part of the game. Everyone accounts for their food and drinks.
All participants are welcome to the Icebreaker reception on the opening day.
Public information:
2022 marks the 70th anniversary of the German Weather Service DWD. DWD Chairman Gerhard Adrian (DWD) as representative of the host and sponsoring organisation of the EMS2022 will address and welcome the EMS2022 participants.
