Since 2006, the German Geophysical Society (DGG) promotes the C.F. Gauss Lecture within the frame of the General Assembly of the European Geosciences Union (EGU). Selected authors give an in-depth overview on a specific field of geophysics. The C.F. Gauss Lecture will be accompanied by a reception for members and friends of the DGG.
This year, the Carl Friedrich Gauss Lecture will take place for the 19th time. We are very pleased that we were able to win Henriette Sudhaus from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) for this year's lecture. Henriette Sudhaus will report on "Better together: seismometers and satellites for observing earthquakes in near- and far-field".
Henriette Sudhaus has been building up the new working group “Seismo-Geodesy” at the Geophysical Institute of KIT since 2024, funded by the Heisenberg Program of the German Research Foundation (DFG). The research focus of this group is the investigation of earthquake centers with seismological and satellite-based geodetic observation methods as well as aseismic tectonic processes and methodological developments in this field.

The Copernicus Medal 2024 has been awarded to Lisa Alexander for her pioneering and ground-breaking work on climate extremes, observations and model evaluation, her global influence via the World Climate Research Programme, International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences and the World Meteorological Organization, and her excellent leadership of the CLIMDEX project.

The Copernicus Medal 2025 has been awarded to Yafang Cheng for her fundamental insights, groundbreaking advances, and impactful public outreach in understanding atmospheric aerosols and their effects on air quality, public health, and climate.

It is Copernicus' great pleasure and honour to present these medals to such outstanding scientists and everybody is invited to attend the corresponding medal lecture and our reception.

The Georg Wüst Prize is awarded annually by the German Society for Marine Research (DGM), with the generous support of Springer Nature, to honor outstanding scientific achievements in marine research. The award recognizes mid-career scientists whose innovative work has significantly advanced the understanding of the ocean, particularly within the context of Earth system science.

Named after Georg Wüst, a pioneer in modern physical oceanography known for his groundbreaking work on deep ocean circulation and the Atlantic Ocean, the prize celebrates not only scientific excellence but also the spirit of curiosity and interdisciplinary thinking that Wüst embodied throughout his career.

The award ceremony at the EGU General Assembly will include a laudation, a scientific talk from the prizewinner, and time for open discussion. The event is open to all attendees and will be preceded by a networking reception.
