GeoHikes is a place-based geoscience communication initiative designed to connect non-specialist audiences with geoscience through short outdoor experiences supported by accessible digital resources. Developed through partnerships between academics, professional geoscientists, educators, and community organisations, GeoHikes combine self-guided walks with mobile-friendly virtual field trips that highlight geoscience in familiar landscapes, including urban settings and recreational trails. Over the past decade, the programme has expanded to nearly 60 virtual field trips across Ontario, reaching diverse audiences through in-person engagement, online platforms, and public events. We reflect on the key challenges and successes of sustaining and scaling a long-term geoscience communication effort, including co-creation with communities, balancing scientific rigour with accessibility, and fostering emotional connection through place and narrative. We discuss lessons learned and identify transferable approaches for effective, community-centred geoscience communication.
