Planetary Exploration, Horizon 2061 is a long-term foresight exercise initially proposed by the Air and Space Academy and led by scientists, engineers and technology experts heavily involved in planetary sciences and in the space exploration of the Solar System. It has now become an association and we invite planetary scientists interested in designing the future missions that will explore our Solar System in the coming decades.

The Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO) is a planned NASA flagship astrophysics mission that will search for signs of life on candidate exo-Earths orbiting nearby stars in their habitable zones. HWO will also conduct transformative investigations in other areas of astrophysics, including in our Solar System. Future observations will assess the habitability of Ocean Worlds like Europa and Enceladus and conduct long-term monitoring of atmospheric activity at Venus, Mars, the giant planets, and Titan. HWO will also play a key role in characterizing fast-moving targets like potentially hazardous near-Earth objects and interstellar interlopers like 3I/ATLAS. As part of this session, we will provide an update on HWO’s ongoing development and the relevance of its potential instrument payload to Solar System and exoplanet science, and answer questions from the EPSC and DPS communities.

Earlier this year, Finland became the 53rd signatory to the Artemis Accords, building on the nation’s established role in space exploration and committing to a set of principles designed to promote the beneficial use of space for humanity. The FRS Splinter Session at the 2025 Joint EPSC-DPS Meeting will focus, in part, on the Accords, as part of a broader discussion centered on: the value of international collaboration and partnership in the space science and exploration domains, the process for establishing international partnerships related to space exploration, and how international cooperation adds value to planetary science missions to make them more impactful and successful. This year’s session will take place on Tuesday, September 9th from 12:45 – 13:45 in the Triton Room (Room 24). Lunch will be provided for the first 40 session attendees.
