The global climate crisis has been extensively documented by scientists all over the world for many decades, and meanwhile its impacts are clearly visible in Central Europe as well. Nevertheless, this evidence has so far not led to a sufficient societal change that addresses the crisis adequately. Climate communication therefore represents a crucial interface between research, the public, policy, and practice.
This session addresses the question of how climate-related facts can be communicated in ways that are understandable, tailored to specific audiences, and scientifically accurate at the same time. The focus will be on approaches that take into account different levels of knowledge, different values, lived realities, and information needs, while enabling constructive societal dialogue. Both theoretical and empirical findings from climate, environmental, and communication research as well as established formats and best practices should be presented.
We invite contributions on communication strategies, audience-specific approaches, visualization and storytelling, dealing with uncertainty and misinformation, as well as participatory and dialogue-oriented formats. The session brings together researchers and practitioners to discuss how climate communication can help convey the current state of research and the challenges posed by the climate crisis in Central Europe in a nuanced, credible, and action-oriented way.
