WS – Workshops

WS1.1

Due to high demand and limited capacities onsite, you can no longer indicate your interest during registration, this was only possible during the early registration. Thank you very much for your understanding.

This workshop will consist of two parts which are planned as lunch events of 1 hour each on two consecutive days (likely Wednesday and Thursday):

Session 1: Data discovery for droughts and wildfires
▪ Introduction to climate data: from observations (satellite, in-situ) to modelled data of previous decades (reanalysis), future predictions, and climate projections under future scenarios.
▪ Access to satellite and model data from EUMETSAT and ECWMF.

The accompanying Session 2 on the following day is on: Data analysis on droughts and wildfires, and their impacts:

Participation in these workshop events is free for all registered EMS2023 attendees.
However, when registering your EMS2023 attendance, please indicate whether you are interested to attend the workshop: Lunch bags will be provided for workshop participants; these are funded by EUMETSAT.

This workshop will consist of two parts which are planned as lunch events of 1 hour each on two consecutive days (likely Wednesday and Thursday):

Session 2: Data analysis on droughts and wildfires, and their impacts
This session will show selected applications and analysis of a wide range of data and products, from reanalysis to near-real-time satellite products:
▪ Characterize a drought phase using climate indicators (climatologies, anomalies, quantiles, etc.) based on C3S datasets;
▪ Onset and development of wildfire events in Europe during a drought period using satellite and CAMS products.

The accompanying Session 1 on the previous day deals with: Data discovery for droughts and wildfires:

As in previous years, the workshop is jointly organised by WMO, EUMETSAT and ECMWF with the objective of bringing together communications professionals in the weather science community.

The NMHS communications workshop will be on Tuesday 5 September 2023 on site at EMS in Bratislava, Slovakia.

It will be followed by the EMS communications session, which is held during the morning of Wednesday 6 September.

The outline agenda for the workshop will include:
• An interactive discussion (show and tell) session providing an opportunity to talk about recent communication initiatives and lessons learnt
• Keynote presentations on topics such as dealing with extreme events, future satellites, and machine learning
• Networking as well as informal social events

We would also be pleased to hear if you have any suggestions for topics you would like to discuss at the workshop, whether it is, for example, misinformation, social media developments or the impact of ChatGPT.

This one-day workshop is your chance to be at the forefront of policy development in high impact events research. Together, we will discuss and analyze key challenges, ranging from climate change and biodiversity conservation to sustainable resource management. By collaborating with esteemed experts and like-minded individuals, you will have the opportunity to contribute to the creation of a comprehensive and impactful policy report for the European Commission.

Workshop Highlights
- Engaging discussions with leading climate researchers and science-policy makers
- Development of a White paper for policy implications to inform decision makers before COP28 starts.
- Collaborative group exercises for practical application of knowledge
- Q&A sessions to address your burning questions to decision makers

Participation in this workshop is free and open for all registered EMS2023 attendees. However, in-advance registration by sending an email would be appreciated.

Be Part of the Change!
Your active participation in this workshop will make a difference in shaping the future of climate research policy. By attending, you will not only expand your knowledge but also contribute to global efforts to protect these unique and fragile ecosystems.
If you have any questions or require additional information, please don't hesitate to contact us at secretariat@ecra-climate.eu.

About ECRA: Knowledge for climate action
The European Climate Research Alliance (ECRA) is a bottom-up initiative launched in 2011 by the European Commission focusing on the objectives to bring together, optimize and expand European expertise in climate research by sharing EXISTING national research capacities and infrastructures. We are building bridges at the science-stakeholder interface towards Knowledge exchange in Earth system Science.
Collaborative Programmes of research: National and European Climate change research programmes have to be streamlined and coordinated, in order to ensure optimum use of human resources, modelling capacities, field activities, and infrastructures, maximising therefore the impact of scientific results and reinforcing the

European Research Area for climate change science.
We strengthen the interface between climate researchers and policy makers to ensure that research findings are effectively communicated and translated into actionable politics. We also promote science communication and outreach: we improve communication skills of early scientists to effectively communicate to a broader audience.

This workshop is led by our Collaborative program Climate Change and High-level Impacts.

Scientists in the early stages of their career often face unique challenges. EMS wants to support them by providing opportunities for exchange of experiences, learning from senior scientists and creating their own network to support the next steps in their career.

Thanks to the support of the Association of Private Meteorological Services (PRIMET, https://primet.org), Early Career Scientists are invited to participate in a networking lunch during the EMS2023. At the beginning there will be a short introduction of PRIMET. A few senior scientists will also be invited to the lunch to give ECS an opportunity to easily get into contact with them. Come and take the opportunity to meet other young scientists.

We appreciate if anyone interested would indicate their likely participation during the conference registration process, so food will be enough for everyone.
The catering will be mostly vegetarian and vegan.”
